How to find a great dentist

The move is over. You’re in your new city, like Jacksonville, or suburb, and you need to start seeking out places. The usual suspects include stores for food and clothes, restaurants, gyms, and also people who can help your medical needs. That includes finding a new dentist. You definitely need to find someone who can help your teeth along with the other members of your family.

Your current insurance company may have a list of dentists that take their insurance. But just going down a list seems so impersonal and it’s hard to gauge. Sure, you may get lucky by finding someone near you, but there has to be a better way. Your usual lifeline of people in your circle may be very unfamiliar with your new surroundings, so that’s not an option. Using the local phone book also feels so very antiquated.

Fear not. Here are some of the best ways to find a great dentist:

Location, Location, Location

Keep your eyes open while walking around your local area. See if you spot any signs for dentists in your neighborhood. That could be such a lifesaver in terms of both not having to spend a lot of time looking and also close enough that you could possibly walk home after a procedure rather than requiring someone to take time out of their day to drive you there and back. The only thing you need to keep track of is how long it actually takes you to get there when walking – otherwise you run the risk of not leaving enough time and wind up being late.

Listen To the Locals

You don’t have to be the most outgoing extrovert to be able to do this. See someone in the grocery store in line who has a great smile? “Hi, I’m new here. I’m looking for a dentist” would be a great way to open the conversation. The majority of the people will gladly share the information that you need. But take their opinions with a grain of salt. Some people like dentists who are all business and do not talk during any procedures while others like those who may make more of an effort to keep them at ease throughout the appointment. You are going to have to be the one who ultimately decides if a particular dentist is right for you.

Go On the Internet

The Internet has opened up a vast array of resources that can help you find anything that you are looking for. There are so many different review sites for anything that you are looking for. You don’t even need a computer. Just use your phone or tablet to open a web browser. Search for dentists who are near your zip code and read what other people are saying.

There’s a caveat though – there’s TOO much out there. Narrow your focus to websites that you know are trustworthy and that will prune out untrustworthy reviews. Carefully read the reviews and take them with a grain of salt. Don’t forget that these dentists are human beings, too, and can have a bad day, just like anyone else. But do be sure to try to harness the power of the internet.

So, those are just some of the ways that you can go about finding a great dentist. Finding one can be so invaluable to you. Be sure to always listen to your gut. You have to be your own best advocate. It doesn’t matter if a close family member thinks the world of a dentist – you’re the one getting plaque scraped off. Do what is best for you.
