There’s one train of thought where people who get a smile makeover are merely indulging in a vanity project. That’s far from the truth. Having a good smile can drastically improve one’s confidence and that can translate to other facets of their lives, including work, friendships and dating.
Dental technology has advanced over the decades so that cosmetic dentistry has become a booming industry of its own. After this work has been done, one’s teeth can look as natural as they always have.
Patients have several choices to pick from when it comes to a smile makeover in the dentist’s office. Here are several of them – though this is not a complete list.
Teeth Whitening
What’s not to like about white teeth? It’s the first thing people notice when someone smiles. Just being able to wisely smile is a boost to one’s confidence.
Patients can either have the dentist use a treatment with gel right there or get customized trays which they use at home. Other options include toothpaste and mouthwash and whitening strips.
The in-office gel has a high concentration of peroxide, which is the main ingredient. The over-the-counter ones have a lesser amount, which is why the results are not as fast.
The risk is that one’s gums and teeth may become sensitive after using them, whether in the office or using the at-home variety.
Orthodontics
For decades, when one spoke of orthodontics, braces often was the first image conjured. That or a headgear. While those mainstays are still around, there are other options, including Invisalign, which are customized mouthpieces that the patient wears.
The best thing about the Invisalign is that people can take them out to eat and brush their teeth. The worst thing about it is that they can take it out… and lose it in a cafeteria. Be aware of one’s ability to focus when choosing this option.
Implants
Those are not the only issues people may have. Other things may include exposed roots, an uneven gumline, different-sized teeth, and indentations in the jaw or gums.
There are several things that people can do at home to continue to keep their great smile:
- They can get whitening toothpaste at a store. While this is not going to be as fast as an in-office whitening, it can be good maintenance.
- Flossing is very important. Getting rid of any particles between teeth can stop gingivitis in its tracks and also improve one’s breath.
- People need to pay attention to what they eat or drink. There are a lot of things that can stain teeth, like curry or pasta sauce. While blueberries are highly nutritious, they can leave one’s teeth blue. Drinks like coffee or wine can also leave a mark.
- Using mouthwash can also be a good way to keep one’s teeth looking great. Plus having good breath is always a strong first impression.
Patients have a lot of choices when it comes to being able to ensure that they can get their mouths to a state where they will feel confident enough to smile at people.
